Christmas is on the horizon, but many fans will already be looking beyond it to the January transfer window. Sunderland can strengthen their squad with just a few key additions.
Jacob Murphy has broken through into the Norwich first team this season after spending the past few years bouncing around the Football League on loan. The London-born winger has contributed seven goals and four assists in his 18 appearances for the Canaries in all competitions so far this season, and was voted as their Player of the Month for October. Described as one of the best young talents in England, David Moyes faces stiff competition to bring him to the Stadium of Light with Southampton, Everton, and Tottenham all reported to be tracking the player. If successful, the Sunderland boss may be able to fill the gap left by the season-long absence of Duncan Watmore.
Sunderland are also rumoured to have interest in defender Kieran Lee from Sheffield Wednesday. The versatile defensive midfielder, who can also play on the right wing, has started every one of the Owls' Championship games so far, and has proven his worth as a keen tackler who can organise the team around himself. Lee has also contributed with four goals, including a beautiful header against Nottingham Forest. However, Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal appeared to dismiss speculation of the move in the Sheffield Telegraph, insisting that Lee "likes being at Sheffield Wednesday [and] it is not easy to move a player who is happy".
Another defender who could be Wearside-bound is Arsenal right-back Carl Jenkinson. Fans will be well aware of our fruitless struggles to fill this position, and Moyes is rumoured to be seeking out Jenkinson - who is frustrated at a lack of first-team play, having started only once in the league this season - as a potential solution. The 24-year-old rated highly enough during two spells on loan at West Ham that the Hammers are also reported to be plotting a bid for his signature on a permanent basis, but has drawn criticism on social media from Gunners fans for poor performances during this campaign.
But one player who won't be holding up a scarf outside the Academy of Light is the out-of-form Besiktas winger Kerim Frei. Despite reports that Sunderland were scouting the player, it now seems as though the Black Cats have dropped out of the race to land his signature, leaving West Brom to fight it out with Bundesliga side FC Koln.
