Player Ratings & Comments - Sunderland players rise to huge occasion, what a day!
Sunderland win on the opening day for the season for just the second time in their four-year stint in League One in efficient performance against Wigan. But the day meant a lot more than three points.
It was a truly glorious occasion at the Stadium of Light, ignoring the farcical organisation beyond the ground causing a 15 minute delay to kick off. A whopping 32k fans packed the stands to watch the opening game of the 2021-22 campaign, it was a glorious thing to behold and to hear in the wake of a pandemic that has kept football at arms reach for so long.
The match itself provided supporters much encouragement for the season, winning with relative ease despite a decent Wigan side fumbling home an early lead courtesy of Gwion Edwards. Ross Stewart would spend the rest of the game proving why Lee Johnson wasn't too fussed about losing top scorer Charlie Wyke, as he showed superb composure to win a penalty dispatched by Aiden McGeady, then nodded home the winner early in the second half.
Now it is your chance to evaluate the player performances in the only interactive post-match feature for Sunderland fans. We include Johnson in the line-up (at the bottom) so you can drop a rating and some comments about the manager too.
It's easy to take part, just scroll down and select a rating for each player. Once you do that, you'll notice a comments box pop up which you can use to tell us more about what you thought of that player. Your comments, and ratings, will feature in our round up feature.
